The Division of Geriatric Medicine offers a challenging and exciting fellowship program. The fellowship is based in the Division of Geriatrics in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern and its affiliated hospitals, the Dallas Veterans Administration Medical Center and Parkland Hospital.
Yeah, Everybody is here to make you the best geriatrician you can be. We have 1-2 fellows per year. Our program is designed to help them understand all the different aspects of geriatrics. One of the most important things that you want to get out of fellowship is see the different models of care and see where you can fit into geriatrics, anything from being a primary care doctor to working as a hospitalist to working as a long term care doctor. All these options are available to you. Ut Southwestern is huge. So you not only have creating in different sites, you'll have training with different people, you'll get different perspectives and different levels of care as well. We have the Clements University Hospital, we have the Parkland Hospital and then we have the V. A. Center. We also have three house call programs. So this gives you a great opportunity to see many different types of patients in diverse settings. Parkland is a real gym here in Dallas. It's one of the largest county hospitals in the country. If you find yourself drawn to a career in the county health system, you'll have the opportunity to see our version of it here in Dallas. While you're rotating at Parkland. The fellows come to the Dallas V. A. For four months of their fellowship and they work at the C. L. C. The C. L. C. Is the community living center. You will have been exposed to a variety of patients with a variety of conditions over here. On the university side, you're going to have more of your classic Medicare and also privately insured patients. Your patients may be accessing really advanced care. We have national models of care called the Ace unit which is the acute care of the elderly unit and also the posh program which is a very special pre operative program for vulnerable elderly adults planning to undergo elective surgery. And acute care for elders unit is not something that's common to most fellowship programs. The emphasis here being the inter professional collaboration and you'll rotate across all the units in the hospital. We have the outpatient clinic where we do outpatient medicine for our older adults. We have three house call programs. We have one through the V. A. One at Parkland and one at the university. We're cove household program within the division of geriatrics. It focuses on high quality patient care but also education. You get two electives during the year and you can do what you want with that time. We have some fellows who have chosen to do research, some who have chosen to follow house calls to work in nursing homes to work on the ambulatory care setting. We want you to figure out where your passion is. What I love about the program is that it's extremely flexible and they want to shape it to be what you need. We have multiple opportunities to do teaching with medical students, interns and residents. We really focus on clinician educators. We like you to be part of our teaching group. It's a big mandate for our division. We want you to develop your own individual style, but that comes with mentorship. And so it's important for us to help you to be the best teacher you can be. We want our fellowships engaged, we want them participating in our conferences. We do a lot of collaborative work with other divisions like surgery, orthopedics, urology. If research is an interest of yours, this is a place of opportunity. The program does regular board review throughout the entire year. We have 100% board passage rate. We look at your strengths, your weaknesses, making sure that you excel in the boards. I really like Dallas. It gives me the diversity of a big city, but at the same time the feeling of a town as well. There's a lot of green space, There's a lot of things to do outdoors. It's really affordable. Dallas is a great place to live. It's a great city for a family. We would love you to come to you to Southwestern because we love our fellas. They're fabulous. We want to teach you, we want you to succeed. My fellowship has been extremely rewarding. There are so many skills that I learned and I think you can get that training here at UT Southwestern. You're gonna get a diversity in patients and diversity and health systems. When you leave here, you're going to be ready to thrive wherever you find yourself, right
