Chapters Transcript Video CREST-MST Trial Uses Magnets to Treat Major Depressive Disorder new psychiatric treatments are needed for the basic premise that the therapies we have today only benefit a few and don't benefit all and as such, many people around the globe are suffering from severe depression. We need new treatments to advance the cure for those patients so they can actually live meaningful quality of life living. E. C. T. Is one of the most effective treatments in psychiatry today. Especially for severe depression. Typically the seizure lasts about 30-45 seconds. The whole thing start to finish is about five minutes and our patients will generally have 10-15 treatments like that. The crest trial is a comparison between E. C. T. And M. S. D. We are the only place in the United States at the present time that's conducting MST research in depression. The differences between E. C. T. And M. S. T. Really stem from one thing and that's the manner in which they're delivered. Electroconvulsive therapy uses electrical stimulation to actually induce the therapeutic convulsive seizure. Magnetic seizure therapy, on the other hand actually uses magnetic pulses. Once we are ready to begin the procedure we get the magnetic coil out okay and this will have already been measured beforehand so that it fits correctly and we know where the device goes and that's it. Once the seizure is actually occurring we can monitor the progress of the seizure by looking at our E. G. Monitor here. The acute series with Mst is the same as with E. C. T. So patients are coming ideally three times a week for treatment patients and families can look forward to getting this kind of treatment not only for benefit in the short term, but also for recovery in the longer term.
