Cornea Fellowship Director R. Wayne Bowman, M.D., and Associate Program Director William Waldrop, M.D., detail the advantages of the program at UT Southwestern.
This is the surgical fellowship designed for someone who wants to be a jack of all trades when it comes to cornea. We take three us fellows a year and we take one international fellow. The international fellows stay here for two years. I'm a product of UT Southwestern from being a resident and a fellow and now someone who's very happy to be a part of the faculty. We have world class facilities and there's a broad range of places where you're gonna work when you're a fellow here, which makes for a very rich experience. The fellows get to practice at two large county hospitals. They get to practice at a large private practice facility and the fourth largest children's hospital and one of the largest veterans hospitals in the country are fellows are expected to come in if nothing else eager to learn and eager to work hard and your experience will take off from day one. I think it's an exceptional opportunity to spend a year training here from full thickness care capacities to end ethereal care capacities to advanced technology, cataract surgery implants and techniques to ocular surface reconstruction and to management from anywhere from the routine to severe ocular surface disease and infections. You get exposure to endothelial corneal transplant, partial thickness anterior lamelo cornea transplants, including doc. And you get exposure to limbo stem cell transplants and corado prosthesis surgery in refractive surgery. You as a primary surgeon will do more than enough cases to be certified. Our surgeons are certified in LASIK PRK all the advanced lasers that are used for carrot or refractive surgery. They have the opportunity to get certified in the lens. X laser surgical volumes have all been excellent fellas also, I think partly because they're so busy have worked together very well and it's been a very collegial association. You're exposed to all fields of ophthalmology. We have expert faculty in all fields, their faculty all exhibit a strong interest in teaching, honing in on what makes an efficient and competent physician insurgent. When you're a fellow with us, you are an assistant instructor in our department and you are fully a member of our faculty actually and we expect a lot out of you because of that. But it also means that you have all the benefits of being a member of our faculty and really feeling like you're part of a team of physicians insurgents who take care of patients together. Dallas has always been a very easy place to live. It is truly a cosmopolitan city. It has incredible restaurants, that has every sports venue known to man. You can find your niche no matter who you are, no matter what you're used to. Dallas has a little bit of everything. One of the most important years of your life is a fellowship. This is where you're gonna really learn what you're gonna be doing for the rest of your life. Ut Southwestern is an amazing institution. This is a great place to be and emerge somebody who can handle any situation that you will face in the world of corny and external disease.
