Chapters Transcript Video Welcome to UTSW/Parkland Welcome to UTSW/Parkland! Take a tour of our OBGYN facilities. This is the virtual Parkland Ut Southwestern interview tour. Welcome to Parkland. Alright so basically all this part of the hospital is dedicated to women infants services. This whole tower over here. The gold tower is basically for us. Third floor is labor and delivery. Fourth floor is the Nicu 6th and 7th floors are an apartment postpartum and eight floors gynecology at any time. There are probably 100 and 20 to 200 patients admitted to R. O. B. G. Y. N. Service. If we pan this way, the Wish Clinic building is completely our own clinic. You can see it's a massive fortress involving our gynecology guy non Euro Gein and AM FM clinics. There's also R. O. B. G. Y. N. Emergency services unit over there. It also happens to be the location of the hospital's only and Best Starbucks. Alright, let's go start our day with some Starbucks. Hey guys, you guys want to tell the applicants about the residents in our program. Yeah, sure. We have a huge program. We have 18 residents per class, 72 residents total. And we come from all different parts of the country, not just from Texas. Not only do we have a very diverse geographical background but also you know, we have people that come from various different walks of life and different past experiences which helps to add to the global diversity of the program. All right, let's check out R. O. B. G. Y. N. E. R. Hi, I'm Vinita. I'm one of the new interns and welcome to the O. G. S. This is our 10 bed obstetrics and gynecology E. D. We see various different types of both obstetric emergencies and gynecologic emergencies. So we can see things like ovarian torsion as well as ectopic pregnancies as well as S. A. B. S. And miscarriages. It's been a great opportunity with its only run by an intern in our two. So we get a lot of autonomy and what's really hands on. Which is pretty great. Hi I'm in America. I'm also one of the second years here working in the O. G. S. Which is our emergency center. So as a second year here down emergency center where we have a lot more responsibility. We're dealing with high risk patients. Um Also managing triage as well. Um So patients that second years typically tend to see our post op patients who may have a wounded. We can see septic abortions. We can also see our sickest patients which are gynecologic oncology patients. Um So essentially just running the board making sure our interns are doing well as as well as our nps. So working with the team of different specialties as well making sure all of our patients are safe. Let's go upstairs to the gynecology clinic. Hi everyone. Welcome to our virtual tour. We're so glad that you guys are watching and getting to see parts of our program. I'm dr chang I'm one of the minimally invasive gynecology faculty. I'm also the program director for the best program in the nation. So we're so happy to be able to share it with. You were really sad that we won't be able to meet you guys in person this year. But hopefully you'll get to see the fabulousness of our program on this video. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to us or to the residency office and we can answer anything that um any questions that you have. So we hope you enjoy the video and we will see you virtually on interview day. So I'm bringing in one of the first year residents on the gynecology block right now. Um if I was coming into the program, some of the things I want to know the way it's set up for the interns right now. We spend 1 to 2 days in the O. R. And the week. We have one data specifically for cervical dysplasia, cold pasta peas and things like that. And then two days that are just seeing patients in clinic all day. The patients that we see are really rewarding and clinic a lot of them are very low resource have been waiting years to get their conditions taken care of. Um So it's really rewarding to either surgically manage them with hysterectomy or put them on medications that finally control their problems and see them back and see how much better their feeling. Um My family and I moved here from Austin texas. My in laws were actually came with us to help take care of our boys. So I'm one of the few residents that has a spouse and Children at home. And we've really enjoyed being in Dallas so far. We were really lucky to find a great school close to our house that we moved into. Um And there's a lot to do around Dallas. Hi guys I'm thai baht, I'm an R. Two and I just want to tell you about our awesome ambulatory surgery center. And what I love about it is when your first year, second year you get to be the primary resident, they're doing surgeries with attendings and that's an awesome experience where you get to learn about your laproscopic skills. Get to do really really cool cases in the A. S. C. So I wish you guys the best of luck. Come check out our A. S. C. Let's go to Prichard then. Alright this is R. O. B. G. Y. And Resident lounge exclusively for our use. It also has some of our call rooms. If you're here on gynecology nights or oncology nights and you need to take a break. Hey I'm Olivia the fourth year resident on the granite called D. C. Team. Hi my name is Terrence and one of the third year residents. So this is Pritchard Lounge. So we just finished tlhe which went very well I might say by dr Terrence Long and so in between cases we just like to hang out here doing some diet coke um eat lunch and get ready for the next case. All right, let's check out the postpartum ward. Hi, I'm Doreen. I'm one of the second years here at Parkland. Here we are on the seventh floor postpartum side we round up 200 patients per day um postpartum and then we have up to 36 patients on anti part. Um When you are on on your O. B. Rotation, you will round on the postpartum patients and then go down to labor and delivery, which we will look at later. Let's walk. We have five or 60. B. Blocks per year. Part of them are nights and part of them are days on Wednesday mornings. We have our Didactic sessions where we get education on how to manage obstetrics and gynecologic patients if you like. High volume, high acuity obie. This is the place to be. Hi, my name is Leslie Johnson. I'm a third year resident here at Parkland. Um One of my main interests throughout residency has been family planning. So um over the past couple of years I've been organizing the Family planning Journal Club. Basically we meet a couple of times a year. Usually quarterly. We have a family planning trained physician who provides abortions in the Dallas area who comes to our meetings when they were in person and now virtually she participates. We generally go over a few family planning related journal articles together and learn how to critically read the those articles. We also have had several groups relating to abortion care come speak with us including the A. C. L. U. Of texas and James due process which is an abortion fund for minors. Um since we aren't able to provide elective terminations here at Parkland. We use this Journal club as a way to explore our interest in family planning. Alright let's go down to labor and delivery. This wall commemorates a lot of things that have happened over the years at Parkland in terms of obsessions and gynecology with our program of course with a lot of history for soft. We deliver a lot of babies every year somewhere between 12,000 to 14,000. Don't worry we don't do it alone. We have a lot of excellent midwives that help us out. We also do a lot of research here. A lot of our faculty also served as our mentors. Not only of course we write Williams, obsessions in gynecology but we also have publications in the Green Journal as well as many other O. B. G. Y. N. Journals that are first author by our residents and fellows. Alright this is what we call the E. C. U. R. Extended care unit. It's basically our step down I. C. U. Unit for obstetrical patients. We have 23 beds and the area is run entirely by one of our third year residents. Let's go hey I'm Sarah I am one of the third years working in the E. C. U. This is an opportunity for us to take care of high Q. T. OBY ante partum and postpartum patients. It's a great great learning opportunity. We ourselves as a third year run the whole E. C. U. With the support of a designated faculty and fellow during the day. This we take care of anything from postpartum hemorrhage to ante partum diabetes in pregnancy to clamp CIA. And I feel that it's really the pinnacle of our obstetrics learning and really forms us into the doctors that we're gonna be when we're done with residency. We have a patient bleeding in 12. No time gotta go have the blood. Now let's go to labor and delivery. Alright this is where it all happens labor and delivery. We have 48 labor and delivery beds biggest labor and delivery ward in the country. Alright now we're gonna check out the work room. Hello welcome to Parkland. Labor and delivery. Were the fourth years on service. And this is our rounding room here you can see we have multiple strips. We have up to 48 laboring rooms. Currently we have three sets of twins and about six preeclampsia picks. Hope you enjoy. Hey guys welcome to Parkland. Sometimes here in L. And D. It gets pretty busy when that happens we gotta go to our secret stash stacked with all the bubbly and diet coke that you need to keep your day going and last but not least thanks to our wellness program, we have now fully stashed with snacks. We have a complete complete coming to room 48 available nurses complete complete room 48. We'll let the L. And D. Team handle that. Let's go check out the operating rooms. Hello, my name is dr women Marino. I'm one of the LBJ were in attendance here. This is our dedicated area with nine dedicated oh are S. For L. N. D. This O. R. Number nine is our bigger or it has special area for uh the niCU team for special deliveries. Alright, I'm getting hungry. It's time for lunch. Alright now I'm gonna grab a snack. I'm already tired then I'm gonna head out to my favorite place to relax here. Part one which is our garden. Okay, I found some friends. Hi. Hello. I'm now I'm the intern. I'm Bethany in the 2nd year. I'm Gabby. I'm the fourth year. I'm Laney, I'm the third year. So this is you know my first year here and I picked Parkland because it's a fabulous hospital where you can see lots of different um pathology but also have patients that are really really grateful for the care that you're providing. I think it's an excellent environment to learn in and be appreciative of the people you get to see and I was born here. So it's cool to deliver babies where you're born um to build off what nee ha said. Um I'm grateful to be a resident in Parkland. Um not only for the vulnerable patients that we take care of, but um I love my co residents, the camaraderie that we have. I feel like it just makes work a really fun place to be. Um And I'm excited to grow along with them and learn along with them and also learn from great upper levels. So you go first. Okay, so I'm Laney, I'm the third year and I love being a resident at Parkland because we get to do a lot of things and see pretty much everything here. Um Dallas is also a great city to live in. So it pretty much has everything that you would ever need, you can find it in Dallas and it has like all the restaurants are excellent. If you want any type of food, you can always find it. There's always something to do, like some kind of festival or like a place to go out or something like that. So I love, I love it. Um I agree with everything they've said, I'm Gabby in the fourth year. Um So we divide our O. B. Teams into a resident from each year, so we get to know each other really well and work together really well and I think one of my favorite things about being at Parkland over the years is just everything that everyone said, you see a lot, You do a lot in and outside of work and the people that you're working with. I mean we are such a big group of people, but you get to know every single one of those people and you work with them day in and day out and they truly become lifelong friends and family and a part of this big, wonderful community, taking care of these wonderful women come to Brooklyn.
