Chapters Transcript Video Ob/Gyn Residency Program Virtual Tour Experience the country’s largest obstetrics and gynecology residency program at UT Southwestern. I really like Ut Southwester and working at Parkland just due to the camaraderie. Additionally, the education here is unmatched. You see everything and anything that you could imagine, we are really dedicated to serving the women of Dallas County. And it is what drives us every single day and night to come into work. You get to work with a lot of the uninsured population and also with the Hispanic population. So that's actually what drove me to this program, I think in residency, the way that you grow and the way that you become the best physician is that you're kind of pushed outside of your comfort zone. If you're a person who likes to learn on the go and kinda learn by experience, this is the place where you wanna be. But the best thing is if you ever need help, there's always someone to help you. I've never felt lost. I've never felt like I could not reach out to someone, whether it's an upper level resident or an attending Parkland Hospital is truly one of the most beautiful hospitals that I have seen in the whole country. I mean, I interviewed everywhere around but a hospital like this, you won't find anywhere else. We are currently outside of Parkland Hospital's main building. We have a total of 72 OBGYN residents in the program. We have 18 per year. We work with true leaders in the field with a high patient volume and we really see the depth and breadth of patient care. This is the OBG Emergency Services Department. It's located in the main A T we serve the women in Dallas who have any gyn related problems as well as any women that are less than 20 weeks pregnant and have any medical issues at all. This department is run by our resident in charge A K A, our second year resident as well as our intern and we are staffed by our attending as well. It's fast paced and it's a really good learning environment because we get to see a variety of medical issues that are gene related. Often we also get called to the main ed for consults as well. One minute, we could be seeing a gyno patient with a bowel perforation. The next minute, we could be seeing a spontaneous abortion and the next minute we could be seeing just like a Barthel incest. It's a huge variety here. We are in the antepartum floor for high risk patients. And as an intern, you get a lot of exposure with high risk patient and conditions such as preeclampsia, diabetes and other conditions that are high risk during pregnancy as a first year, you are the House Officer which is basically answering all the questions, all the pages. So at the first year, you get a lot of exposure to this type of patients. The Parkland Gynecology Division is excellent. We have four teams from our OBGYN residents who are always on the gynecology rotation. We spend two of those days in clinic, one of those days learning and also in clinic and then two of those days in the operating room, it gives us a really good exposure to clinic and hands on experience in gynecology for the interns. I think their operating days are very awesome. They get to be one on one with an attending. So you get the experience being in the operating room, being the person in charge being the person who's asking for the instruments. And I think that's very important to make you a confident position. We run one of the busiest labor and delivery centers in the whole country. We have 46 beds. We see everything. We literally see it all. We deliver so many babies uh about 40 a day, sometimes even more than that. But it gives an excellent training experience. One of the other things that I love about this program is that we have so many attendings. You can always find someone who is willing to mentor you be there for you and give you excellent training. We do about 1400 hysterectomies every single year. And those are all resident run. We get to be in the or and we get to be active. And it's amazing. Our gynecology clinic and our Obstetrics clinic operate out of their own building called the Wish Clinic. And we have these excellent pods and rooms set up. So it's really efficient for us to see patients. Got great clinic staff who are always supporting us, helping us see as many patients as we can. It's actually not uncommon for us to see upwards of 80 patients a day. So this is a very efficiently run clinic. And the best part is that whenever you need a break, there is a Starbucks downstairs for a quick pick me up. This is our cafeteria. You have everything here from sandwiches, pasta bar, salad bar. We are provided a meal fund at the beginning of residency. Those are refilled every year. Additionally, the OB Gyne program provides lunches catered in while on OB services and while working in the Ogs. Well, this one, this is our resident work room. This is an area where we can just hang out between surgery cases or whenever we're on our 24 hour shifts. And we have a movie theater where we in the gynecology and the gynecology oncology residents sit and hang out. We have a lot of computers in here where you can work on your cases. If you've read the Williams textbooks, you've already started learning from us being able to work with the faculty whose names are in that textbook and who write the papers is just really an extraordinary experience. It also has on call rooms, the showers, bathrooms that you can also sleep in. At our residency. We have all of the five major fellowships represented, which is really great for residents who are applying to fellowship or interested in fellowship because that means you have the mentorship available, you have the research that you need and everyone is super supportive when you're applying to fellowship. One of the best things about our program is the graded autonomy. As you go up in the program, you just have more responsibilities. And I remember when I did my first forceps assisted vaginal delivery. And when I trained my lower level to do hers with the training program here, it has really shaped me to who I am today as a provider. Having the high volume has made me an independent provider. I feel very confident, but at the same time, I also feel very comfortable reaching out to my co residents or my faculty for support or questions when needed as a first year resident who's been here for only about two weeks. I can say that I've learned an incredible amount, not just about medical information, but also, you know how things run, how to run a clinic, scheduling surgeries. It's all part of the process. And so it's really good, you know, to understand how everything works behind the scenes. One of the things I really love about this program is how large we are. We're the largest in the US. And so there's always residents around to help you out. There's always residents around to hang out when you're off work. Dallas is an amazing city to live in whatever niche or whatever hobbies or interests you have. You will definitely find in this city. Dallas has so many great perks. One, it has such a low cost of living. It's very affordable to eat here to live here. It's great. You have every single major sports teams and great outdoor space. I love the city. You always have something to do. Some of my classmates are from the Dallas area, so they usually take you some places just to get to know the city. So that's been an amazing experience. My favorite thing about this program are my co residents. We're really one huge family that support each other. I'm starting my third year and even just in the first two years here, I feel like I have grown exponentially as a person, as a physician, as a teammate, as a researcher. I have learned so much Parkland. It definitely throws you in and you learn very quickly. So I think I was, you know, just reflecting, I think I'm just beyond what I thought I would be in my fourth year and there's still a whole year of training. I feel really competent, very lucky to have been here. You should choose Ut Southwester to train if you want to leave residency, feeling like you could handle anything if you wanna take care of a wide breath of pathology. And if you wanna take care of the underserved women of Dallas, what sold me for Ut Southwester was just the experiences you'll get clinically surgically educationally, I think. And I know I'll be prepared for anything and everything. At the end of my four years here, I absolutely love what I do and I will miss Parkland very much at graduation. Thank you so much for joining us in this virtual tour of the best residency program in the country. We hope you enjoyed your time with us and we hope you choose UT Southwester. Bye. Created by
